Edges of Africa
Ray Gilham
This is a true story of a young man's adventures in Africa. He is first attracted to the continent while visiting a farm in Tunisia and has a yearning to see more. The captivating charm of Johannesburg and the nightlife of its suburb Hillbrow holds him spell bound for many months before he breaks free to explore the bush, without a guide or mentor, to find the real Africa. The realisation that Southern Rhodesia, under threat from terrorists and world opinion, may become a 'No man's land' drives him into touring the country before it deteriorates into possible civil war. He finally marries a South African girl and goes to live in a remote country village where he not only faces the pitfalls and difficulties of married life in apartheid South Africa but the overhanging threat of company politics.
