The Mississippi Nineteenth Infantry Regiment was enlisted for the war at Richmond, Va., June 1, 1861. The companies of the regiment were first mustered into the State service. Christopher H. Mott, of Marshall County, who had been first Lieutenant of Company I, Mississippi Rifles, in the War with Mexico, had organized a company of State troops in 1860, and was one of the Brigadier-Generals of State troops under Gen. Jefferson Davis in January, 1861. This regiment was the first from Mississippi raised for service "during the war," and it was numbered the Nineteenth. The 19th fought throughout the war in Virginia.
