Addie Lang does the unthinkable and opens a classified document belonging to the infamous East German spymaster, Markus Wolf. She reads about a NATO First Strike plan in the event of war.
Worse yet, she copies the file.
Her impulsiveness proves her undoing. Her suspicious boss guesses something's wrong and puts her under surveillance.
In panic Addie bolts. Her flight confirms Wolf's suspicions. The East German regime puts out a nationwide alert.
Meanwhile two arch rivals-the KGB and the GRU-use the crisis with Addie to advance their own agendas. One kidnaps a member of the Stasi on the streets of East Berlin. The agent is drugged, interrogated and released. Panic stricken, the East German regime believes Addie's betrayal and the kidnapping are linked.
Electronic chatter alerts CIA station in West Berlin that something is afoot in East Germany. An operative sneaks into the country to look into it. He locates Addie and three close friends-all in hiding. He agrees to help them flee the country in return for the copy of the file.
All goes well until the agent suffers a stroke, leaving the four fugitives on their own-with hunters closing in.
High Metal Fences serves up a multi-level story filled with tensions, surprises, and a compelling sense of place.
