Sonata No. 1 in D Minor, Op.11
Albert Roussel
French composer Albert Charles Paul Marie Roussel (1869-1937) turned to music as an adult after spending seven years in the navy, and became one of the most prominent French composers of the interwar period, with his early works strongly influenced by impressionists such as Debussy and Ravel, though he later turned toward neoclassicism. This work for piano and violin, reversing the usual order, was dedicated to his teacher as the Schola Cantorum, Vincent d' Indy, who roiled the contemporary waters with his outspoken opposition to Impressionism, though he did recognize Roussel's genius despite the latter's stylistic adventures. Movements: I. Lent - Très animé - Lent, II. Assez animé - Très lent - Assez animé, III. Très animé - Très moderé - Très animé.
