This story is not intended to demonize one side and glorify another, nor is it to romanticize death, for death is not romantic to those who stand face-to-face with it. It will simply try to tell of a generation of civilians caught in the middle of a war that lies just right outside their front door. Even though they may have escaped from the shells falling from above, they were devastated by it. Volume one of The Book of Gideon is told through the eyes of a French-farming family trying their best to survive the very beginnings of the Great War.
