Deep in the land of Rome's enemies, a ghost awakens the Emperor Marcus Aurelius with a terrifying message of coming destruction. Finding his army hemmed in by the barbarians and his troops stalked by evil dreams, the man known as the Philosopher-king discovers that the prophecy of the evil spirit is upon them. Two of Rome's mighty legions, Apollo and Thunder, arrive at this dark moment from a distant part of the Roman Empire. They come in answer to a call for help from their beloved ruler. Marcus Aurelius will soon discover that many of the men in these legions, men who call on the "forbidden name", do not fear the night demon.
