Barry Douglas was a homeless drifter, a petty thief who would busk for a few pounds when he could and steal a few when he couldn't. On his own since age fourteen, he had grown skilled in avoiding emotional entanglements of any kind. When things began to get personal, he quickly moved on. Seeking a bed at a homeless shelter one winters night in the north of England, however, Barry meets a man who turns his world upside down.
