Halidon Hill was the first battle Edward the third was a part of he had campaigned in the earlier failed Wearside campaign against the scottish raiders in 1327 A. D. who evaded open battle and sought only to hit and run in lightining raids which they had been better suited to and had operated when raiding in England. Travelling light they did not have a large baggage train holding them back by carrying the basic of supplies with them on their mounts they could cover the ground ahead of their English rivals evading large scale open battle and making use of the cover of woods and forests and the mountain passes and highlands they were at home within. Halidon Hill was the clash of the powerful English and Scottish elites who held lands in both kingdoms and would fight to preserve the power they controlled playing their liege lords and kings off against one another in the complex boderland politics that saw families and clans become rivals and enemies for power and control.
