Themes
Ken Gouldy
Themes was a poetry book concept that I conceived as my style of writing progressed into how it exists today. I started by using a subject, whether it be a noun or verb, and conceptualized a person's point of view around the topic. Each piece takes you into their life and mind frame at a specific time or another. I found myself entranced how many people could be experiencing completely different situations, yet be facing the same dilemma. I finished Themes with a project that I'd been working on for years, called I am the Mammoth Man. It was similar to Themes in the sense that it was written based on someone's point of view, but lacked an overall theme that tied them all together. It's main focus was how persons would describe themselves without bashfulness or burden. In a way it was like a confession of sorts, showing off all of their imperfections. In a way, I was trying to get each of these pieces to give the reader a reflection into their own life, of aspects or faults they may ignore about themselves. Some are satirical in nature, but never lack seriousness. Take them for what they are, and remember: they are characters, about no person in particular.
