When an alien entity uses plagues to wipe out 99.9% of Earth's population only 3,000 people survive in twenty isolated locations around the globe. American and Canadian survivors - and their newly sentient dogs - decide to gather in Key West, Florida, where the weather is warm, fish are plentiful and the island is an isolated and secure refuge. They must help each other survive the hardships of lost loved ones, few resources, and limited technology. The alien known as the Mechanic is the mastermind of their decimation and is making changes to Earth and its topography. But now the curious alien has taken human form and is joining the survivors in Key West. A computer wizard, a CIA pilot, an astrophysicist, a veterinarian, a former NSA analyst and others find themselves suspended in time; unaging but struggling to survive on a planet changing around them.
