A snow storm threatens to trap the Scott Ranch cows and calves at the top of Black Mountain. The previous summer, twelve-year-old Billy Scott successfully led firefighters up the mountain in the middle of the night because his father, Bob Scott, had broken his leg. This required Billy to shoulder adult responsibility. Bob's leg still hasn't healed properly. Against his mother's wishes, Billy and his horse, Rowdy, again take on a grown-up challenge, this time alone. Bob believes Billy can complete the job before the storm arrives. But can he?
