John Cowley enters the Civil War at age fourteen, first as a lieutenant's aide and then becomes the chef's helper for the officers of the 4th Michigan Regiment of cavalry. Barely sixteen, he becomes the group's chef. At the age of ninety, he wrote of his experiences during the war, including foraging, owning a race horse, even capturing a few Rebels, helping the surgeon operate on a battlefield, and other unusual activities. After the Apache leader Cochise died, most of his clan ended up on the San Carlos Reservation. Those who refused to go there were called the "Nameless Ones." They tried to continue their nomadic life. In 1880, a violent act brings together a man who had grown up with the Apaches and a woman determined to find her husband's killer and bring the crooked Indian agent to justice. In a hidden courtship in the Holy Roman Empire, the royal couple with three daughters of marrying age, wants a trusted fellow to go to Vena (Vienna) and bring back suitors for the daughters. More than suitors visit, however, and the fun begins. While the actual suitors are becoming acquainted with the daughters, two courtesans try their best to kill the prince naturally, so that their Usurpian boyfriends can take over the courtship, which is forever changed.
