Kerala is a unique state in India, known for universal education, high rate of literacy, good quality health services, gender equality, etc. Remarkable achievements of the state have rooted in its prolonged history of education. And it is a coincidence that, then ruler of Travancore Rani Gouri Parvathy Bai issued a proclamation that, education is the responsibility of state, may be first time in the history education. Various agencies including missionaries established institutions of higher education in Kerala, during British rule. This book has been written after conducting rigorous research in the area. The period of study is identified as 1817 - 1947, i.e., the period from establishment of first higher education institution and extended up to independence in 1947. Various primary and secondary sources were analysed and interviews with experts in relevant fields were conducted complete this work in a befitting manner. There are chapters such as introduction, historical overview, related research, methodology, educational institutions during 1817 - 1947, CMS college Kottayam, changes in higher education in Kerala in pre-independence period, summary and conclusion.
