Charterville James Longford
Charterville
James Longford
Charterville, in Minster Lovell, Oxfordshire, was the third and largest of five communities established by Chartist leader Feargus O'Connor in the 1840s. In eight months over the winter of 1847-48, O'Connor and his assistants built 78 single storey cottages to a standard plan and were ready to take settlers. The buildings were of good quality and each had a large plot of land of up to four acres, yet by 1852, all the original settlers had left. This book describes the background to the creation of Charterville, the problems that its founders and settlers encountered, the reasons for its failure and the settlement's geographical legacy. Written to academic standards, this work is fully referenced with a bibliography and contemporary and modern illustrations.
