Historical Sketch And Roster Of The North Carolina Fifty Sixth Infantry Regiment
John C Rigdon
The North Carolina 56th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in July, 1862, at Camp Magnum, near Raleigh, North Carolina. Its members were recruited in the counties of Camden, Cumber-land, Pasquotank, Northampton, Orange, Cleveland, Alexander, Rutherford, and Mecklenburg. Research on the 56th Infantry regiment is aggravated by the fact that we have two Gen. Ranson's (Robert and M. W.) and M. W. served under his younger brother Robert. Accounts referring to Gen. Ransom's troop movements most often refer to Robert's actions and may or may have not include M. W.'s brigade. To further complicate matters, the 56th was assigned to M. W.'s brigade but was for much of the war detached on other duty under the direct command of their Col, Paul F. Faison.
