Hotelier Bear Rafferty has relocated from New Orleans to Ojai, California to open his fourth boutique hotel. Falling in love with the beautiful city, he quickly gets to know the locals: bar owners Iris and Carmen, book-nerd Hannah, construction boss Penn and spiritual leader August Lemar. As he begins work on his hotel, however, he begins to run into complications and realizes his ambitions are being blocked by an unknown rival. At the same time, he is drawn to the peace of August Lemar's retreat among the orange groves of the Ojai Valley, but soon grows suspicious of the leader's motives. When he meets a troubled young woman, Emery Flynn, who is under the care of Lemar, he becomes concerned that August is running, not a spiritual retreat, but a sex cult. Bear reaches out to Emery who appears afraid of him but as the two grow closer, an attraction blooms. As they begin to fall in love, however, a series of increasingly disturbing attacks in the normally peaceful city brings pain and terror to the small population, and when Bear is implicated, he has to fight to maintain his innocence and his new life in the city. When Emery finds herself locked in a deadly battle with her old life and her new love, she and Bear have to find a way to defeat those who would part them forever, and in the most brutal, final way...
