"To love oneself is the beginning of a passion that lasts a lifetime." - Oscar Wilde

The term of narcissism was borrowed by Freud from a text by Paul Näcke published in 1899, in which he proposes the term narcissism to designate a behavior in which an individual treats his own body as the body of a sexual object, a behavior that Havelock Ellis had designated as narcissus-like, the year before. Until then, only the mythological character of Narcissus existed. It is in this sense of self-addressed sexuality that Freud first introduces narcissism into psychoanalytic theory. The term then extended, in psychoanalysis itself, to self-love in general, to self-esteem, to the organization of personality, to the point that it is difficult to give a definition unequivocal term. More recently, many sociological studies have used the term to define the individual consequences of changes in today's society. The term appears readily in articles from the mainstream press, as does the adjective "Narcissistic", excessively used in psychoanalysis, has passed into everyday language. The notion of narcissism is a victim of a success that makes its contours difficult to define.
