Following the events of Out on the Highway, Todd and Colton embark on a summer-long road trip. While stopping at the Grand Canyon, they receive an invitation to go to San Francisco and stay with Akio Nakamura - a wolf in his seventies, who was once the partner of Todd's late and mysterious uncle, Deke Aldrington. It all sounds perfect, until Todd's father calls him and warns him that Deke had the kind of past that's perhaps better left buried. Todd and Colton make a decision: they're going to answer the invitation, and just avoid asking about the dark part's of Deke's past, but as their stay with Akio grows longer, they start to realise that things might not be what they seem on the surface.***'Return to New York' is a novella narrated by Colton Vincent, following on from the events of Akio's House. It's almost time for Todd and Colton to go to New York to start their first term at college. Colton has been secretly afraid that going back to New York will re-unite him with a former friend, a red panda named Obie Calabrese, who might not be entirely pleased to see him. When Colton gets a phone call from Obie, he decides to make a secret trip to New York to confront the past.
