This Arthurian story surpasses all others in imagination because the author has created a unique character by which to tell this fabulous legend of old. This is a lighthearted but sometimes serious journey into the past where the dog Cadbury tells his life's story, revealing to the reader the "times," which is sub-Roman Britain, circa A. D. 500. Familiar to many readers will be when Arthur becomes acquainted with his sword, and also his home called Camelot, and, of course, Guinevere and other familiar characters like Lancelot and Morgana. What is different and exciting in this book is the era in which it is set: sub-Roman Britain. The memory of the Roman occupiers is still fresh in the minds of the people, and the island is still being called Britannia. As King of all Britons, Arthur must fight to maintain peace not only between his people, who war against each other, but he must also defend the island country against the incoming Saxons. This King Arthur is a Christian. The blending of paganism with Christianity is an evil which Arthur struggles against, and its consequences rears it angry head on more than one occasion. For being a dog, Cadbury is a very good witness. He will grow in the reader's heart and they will find themselves believing that he truly lived as King Arthur's dog, as a war dog that travelled the roads of Britannia with the king's army. Rich in Arthurian legend, this story will entertain the minds of many, from the youth to the "rich in years."
