The year is 1956. Howard Smith is a young man, a teenager, just transplanted from New Jersey to Minnesota. The move has allowed him to escape from a messy, unresolved social situation and begin anew. By pure chance, he meets Annie, a young woman from Chicago. She is the young woman who every parent dream of having as a daughter. She is brilliant, straightforward, athletic and charming. Her grandmother and her mother were renown concert pianist and Annie at fifteen is already more adept at the piano than either her mother or grandmother. Annie's life is complicated because she has a high IQ, goes to an all-girls school, and her very wealthy father treats her like a twelve-year-old. All of this has helped make her interactions with young men her age awkward. She meets Howard Stevens by chance, and they end up working together to get the families sailboat ready for an upcoming regatta. At their first meeting, they are friendly and attracted to each other. A few days later they find themselves in love with each other something Annie's family will not allow. Annie finds her way around this obstacle, and the relationship becomes a terrific match. It allows them to help each other mature and become abler than either would ever be on their own. Eager to find his place in the world, and with Annie's support and love, Howard hurtles headlong through his youth searching for answers and somewhere to belong. What he discovers through friendships, educational striving, a tragic love affair, and a marriage, come experience. These combine to shape his destiny, scar his soul and teach him lessons about living he never imagined.
