When you are a child, the world is an endless playground and your world is an empty canvas. Like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon, so does your unique personality. It begins to surface even before you can string together the simplest of sentences. There is so much to do yet you are eager to grow up: "I can't wait until I can be a mom/dad, can drive a car, and can get a job like Mommy and Daddy." Before you know it, your wishes have come true and soon those carefree days of chasing butterflies are behind you and you are now the parent. In what seems like a flash, you wake up one morning and are now a grandparent, fighting those gray hairs, aching bones, and the realization of your immortality. The good news is that with those dreaded signs of aging come both wisdom and time for much reflection. After celebrating the milestone birthday of sixty, Karen decided to share her memories of growing up as part of the Baby Boomer Generation with her millennial children. She wanted them to know about black and white televisions; coming home from school the day President Kennedy was shot; staying up late to watch Neil Armstrong become the first man to walk on the moon; attending Latin masses; learning to read with Dick, Jane, and Sally; watching streakers on her college campus; and life before computers and microwave ovens. She wanted to write these stories "before my memories fade with time."
