The Writer of Poems
Writing a poem is lacking if it does not rhyme,
Is no fun at all and some say, a waste of time.
A serious chord can be struck that's very profound,
If in its expression too, it has a beautiful sound.

A poem is all about what one has to say,
So, a good message in rhyme wins the day.
No need to make bland prose a major crime,
Just a misdemeanor for failing to rhyme.

Poems may make us laugh and cry,
Cause us to think and wonder why.
When concerned or worried, poems are rife,
To express all sorts of peculiar things of life.

And then too one's friends don't escape,
Foibles they'd rather the pen not remake.
But what is life for but to see and observe,
If not just to live and love, it's to be absurd.

Three things poetry is not supposed to discuss,
Politics, religion, and taxes, but what's all the fuss?
Why should they be outside the boundaries of a poem?
For each is something we can't help but know'em.

A product of wrestling with ideas 'til put down in style,
Good for a laugh or smile, that we all need once in a while.
Some offer advice or help to those wondering what to do,
Based only on having learned the hard way a thing or two.

Others share observations, common, unique, or given a twist,
Some lend perspective to see through the cultural mist.
You may call them corny, clever, or profound, if you may,
But on any given day, they're just "thoughts along the way."
