The text that follows may perhaps be a first in its class for those students of Italian culture who do not know the language and who cannot easily find an English-language text that presents a panoramic view of the advances accomplished in the various fields of art, history, music and literature by one of the most inventive and generous people in our society. While such texts exist for language students of French, German, and Spanish, there appears to be a dearth of esthetic and historical reviews in English of the civilization that was the mother of these others. The publication of this manual, which, as the French could say, is comparable to their editions of, 'les étapes de civilization, ' should go far in helping many who do not read Italian develop a keener sense of the Italian spirit which continues to inspire so many talented people both today as well as in times past.
