Wheeler, a little black bear, is upset to learn he has to leave Seattle and move far away with his little girl, Hailey, whose mother has gotten a new job. Hailey's mother gives her a camera to help with the transition, and Wheeler decides to write about his own experience. As the family travels halfway across the country in a big moving truck, Wheeler records his feelings and adventures. By the time he arrives in Acorn Falls several days later, he finds he can do things he hadn't thought possible before the big move.
