After pursuing a pair of outlaws into the Piney Woods of East Texas, bounty hunters Charlie Brittle and Owen Ashe hit a run of bad luck. First the rains come, then Charlie falls ill. Worse still, they discover someone has already killed the men they were after. Things are looking bleak until they meet Hiram, a traveling snake-oil salesman, and his ward, a young woman named October. Owen is suspicious of the pair, but in an effort to get Charlie to safety he agrees to ride along with them. With killers lurking in the woods, and Charlie's health rapidly declining, Owen thinks they're in a bad spot. And that's before he learns October's dark secret, or discovers the danger that awaits them all on the trail ahead.
