Alysia Rose can extract demons from infected children's minds. A gift her now-dead parents bestowed to her at a young age for reasons she does not understand. Only during a child's deepest sleep, their REM sleep, can Alysia perform extraction as the mind is more flexible.

As she enters Bethany Wild's twelve-year-old mind to remove one of the worst infestations she has ever encountered, she is confronted by a demon who proclaims to be the mouthpiece for the Lord of Demons and Jarapenth, Crimson.

Unable to rescue Bethany, she returns and is drawn into the mysterious Sect of Light, who might or might not be on the side of good. They hold journals her parents kept before their deaths which could have answers to what Alysia seeks. The journals are a mystery unto themselves, as the laws of physics appear not to apply.

Alysia, with a team of protectors known as the Sovereign Guard and a close-knit group of her closest allies, begins the task of hunting down the dagger. But darker forces are at work, and a spy could be dead-set against them finding the blade successfully.

Should they fail to acquire the Kalama Dagger, hundreds of thousands of minds are at risk. But Alysia also must weigh what it means to hand over an ancient weapon created to destroy.
