"This was my first experience with the urgency of 'fleeing' in the most immediate and literal sense. It was only then that I could fully imagine the terror felt by my family and other refugees during their escape from Rwanda in the 1990s, when they resisted forced repatriation by hiding in the forests of Tanzania. In that breathless moment on the tarmac in 2002, I felt the visceral terror of what it really means to be a refugee just as they had, terrorized by the harsh realities of being nationless, propelled forever onward in flight."
