In England - Now (Stories & Observations) provides pretty much what it says on the tin: tales, founded upon the facts of contemporary English living; 29 of them. Serious concern and social comment rub shoulders with the farcical and the marginally outrageous. One story diverts from the main path and takes us to Paradise; another re-visits the tradition of a spectral story for Christmas. There are two additional experimental, pieces: one is a stylised prose addition to Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, and the other is a modern English prose translation of the Anglo-Saxon alliterative poem, The Battle of Maldon.
