The story takes place in Paris, in the second half of the eighteenth century almost on the eve of the bloody Revolution of '89. Already on his arrival, the protagonist, the Marquis Francesco Caracciolo of Carrascosa together with the trusted secretary Gaspare, perceives something strange and new in the air "it was like being in a strange unreal calm that announces a furious storm."
