A man of East European origin is found dead by the River Thames near Hampton Court, south of London. Another person of apparently similar background was attacked while sitting on a bench by the Serpentine, a lake in London's Hyde Park. Is there a connection between the two incidents? Inspector Mason's enquiries lead him to various vacation resorts in Britain, where a series of ransom-ware attacks has occurred, and eventually to Belgrade and Pristina, capital of Kosovo, in his bid to solve these crimes. His able young assistant, Detective Sergeant Alison Aubrey, assists him by compiling a database on demands for ransom made to leading hotels and banks, discovering a connection with some populist political movements in Italy and Britain.
