From the ill-conceived ideas of Galen of Pergamon to the first full description of the circulation by William Harvey, the book traces the evolution of an understanding of the circulation through Greco-Roman times and the Golden Age of Islam then mediaeval Europe to the Age of Enlightenment. The book then embarks on a comprehensive study of cardiac function and disease, then development of arterial and venous physiology and diseases.
