Young Titus Fufius has made a complete mess of his life. In a bid to escape, he lies about his age and joins the 47th Legion as a Libritor- an artilleryman working a scorpion, a type of small portable ballista. Tribal unrest draws the 47th out onto the grassy plains of Yallick where they face the mounted archers of the Ozani tribe. Heavy infantry is a poor match against the mobil horse archers; will the balance lie in the hands of the Libritors and their scorpions or will the enemies and their mercenaries prevail?In a different time, in a different place, the world was not as we know it. Rome was different. But the soldiers in the Legions were the same. This is the story of some of those men.
