Christmas, a season of love and hope, used to be Susan's favorite time of the year. Now as a divorced mother of two girls, struggling to keep a small country grocery store solvent, she fears not being able to provide a home for her daughters. In the late 1950s, not only was the USA in a period of transition, so was Susan Carlisle when she lost not only the financial support of a husband, but the spiritual support of her church and the emotional support of former friends. Amid the fears and exhaustion, Susan tries to keep holiday traditions alive for her daughters when a chance encounter with Captain Ian O'Malley changes their lives forever. Susan, Beth, and Cathy are transported from an agricultural, coal mining, poverty region to the land of movie stars, Spanish ranchos, and wealth.
