Nicole Allwynn is an academic, researching the life of a mysterious 18th Century woman whose fragmented poetry describes painful loss and longing, set in the wild hills of Bronte country. How did the notebook of poetry end up in San Francisco? And what happened to the poet and her illegitimate child? Nicole's research brings her face-to-face with her own struggles to find love: her cold father, her cheating ex-lover and the child she chose not to have. Her husband Clive is about to land the biggest account of his advertising career - the astonishingly profitable Feldmanns Bank. But the debauched and vicious Alex Palmer will stop at nothing to make it his own - sensing there is even more to gain in the bank's seedy underside of pornography and drugs, overseen by the prodigal brother, Walter Feldmann.
