Ernestine is not a vicious woman masquerading as a delightful grandma. She is a lovely widow with a skill for killing terrible people. While overseas as a young woman with the Peace Corps, she had had to choose between killing a local man or watching him kill one of her students. Not a hard decision for Ernestine. She successfully covered it up as an accidental death but back in the States she explained what she had done, and so started a lifelong friendship with Ben, who later became her handler. Over the last few years several horrible criminals, who were out of reach of the law, have been expedited into the afterlife by an innocent little lady. Ben knows she is a treasure among operatives and is protective of both her identity and her person. None of Ernestine's children or grandchildren have any suspicions. Which only goes to show how good Ernestine really is.
