In this story, futuristic yet believable scientific discoveries result in the restoration of vision in a sightless beagle. Important breakthroughs in studies of the biology of the eye lead to regeneration of a functioning retina, which together with the instrumentation engineered by the research team, allow the investigator to monitor what the dog sees. Unfortunately, at the height of the group's startling success, the animal strays into the hands of a sadistic social misfit and is used as a tool for attracting women, with tragic developments. In the end, the magnificent accomplishment of the chief scientist becomes the source of his greatest loss.
