This collection of sketches was first published in 1898, the outcome of the English author's 'interesting holiday tramps and leisure hours from business'. It was to excite a desire in the hearts of his countrymen 'to visit the borderland between England and Scotland, haunted by legend, romance, tradition and ballad lore'.
