The novel is set in the early 1970s and charts the transition from an age-old peasant culture to a modern technological one. It covers 24 hours in the lives of the narrator and his father and brothers as they harvest grain in North Cork in the shadow of the American moon landings. The past is interwoven with the present and in this Bildungsroman, reality sometimes comes into conflict with the dreams and ideals of the young narrator.
