Laurie's idyllic retirement in the Surrey hills is shattered by the unexpected appearance of a ghostly figure. If it had materialised just once, she could have written it off, but the ghost is persistent and his pleas for her attention grow more and more dramatic. Desperately craving sanctuary, she flees to the beautiful Italian countryside, where she is nourished by old friends and the traditional way of village life. However, even there she cannot escape him.

Who is the ghost and what does he want? Laurie must battle with these questions if she is ever to be left alone. She must find the courage to tackle this mystery head on and alone if she or the ghost is ever to be free. This journey takes her into the Jewish faith and back to her working life decades ago. Can she fit the pieces of the puzzle together to once again find peace?
