Paula saw her life as fairly ordinary - if there is such a thing. Not always plain sailing, losing her mum at an early age and later the unhappy end of her first marriage. But she picked herself up, got on with it - and then met John. At first, Paula noticed odd little things about him. But he would be fine again and she'd shrug off the doubts. When things happened that were really strange, she'd find excuses to convince herself everything was okay - and she'd carry on. Without realising it, Paula was becoming a victim. Her abuser was her husband, now the father of her two adorable children.

Dragged into a world of darkness, violence and sheer insanity, she had to escape. She tried to break free, fighting to keep her children safe and herself sane. But, always, the threats would come. "Try that again and I'll kill your family... and you'll have a very nasty accident." The abuse carried on for years until John did something so dreadful, she just had to make her move.
