Short Stories to Change the World
Peter Rudge
What would it have been like to accompany the author as he, with his engineer friend, drove from northern Tasmania to Melbourne! A greater ambition would be to hop aboard a transcontinental train which carries Queensland coal to the steel mills at Karratha; return with iron ore from Mt Price to the factories back at Gladstone. It may be easier to take the new leisurely tourist train trip across the continent. Or join the author's party in taking the inaugural trip by rail from Moscow to New York and in the process across the now-filled-in Bering Strait. Or follow the lead of a distinguished sportsman who might have opened the door for aboriginal communities into a better lifestyle. Any of these things and more are available... only one of the stories is no longer possible; but imagine what the north of Australia might be like around Darwin and the offshore islands if the initiative had been taken to relocate the colony of Hong Kong to those parts before the Second World War.
