The Topography of Tears project was launched by Harper's magazine in 2013 and then featured online by the New Yorker and Smithsonian magazine. Those pieces went viral and were picked up by outlets ranging from WNYC's Studio 360 and PBS's NOVA to TIME for Kids, Popular Science, Broadly, and Medical Daily. These photographs also inspired a new haute couture line by Darquer, the most renowned lace company in France.

The project continues to garner media attention, including a Dr. Oz segment aired in May 2016. NPR's Morning Edition has also expressed interest.

The author has built a reputation for her photomicroscopic work at the intersection of art and science. This project and her previous book, Bee, received International Photography Awards and were acknowledged by the scientific community for inspiring curiosity about science. Bee was also named a Best Book of the Year by NPR, Discover, and Elizabeth Avedon.

The author's website has generated over 1000 personal requests for information about the book when it becomes available.

The book will contain previously unreleased photographs and forewords by poet Ann Lauterbach and William H. Frey II, whose Crying: The Mystery of Tears is credited as the most reputable scientific study about tears.
