A Heartbeat Away is an intriguing mystery that brings the team of Julius 'J. D.' Dickens and Isaiah 'I-Hop' Hopkins, two private detectives, to Las Vegas, where they are hired to find out what really happened to Tommy 'TNT' Gale, a top contender for the middleweight championship, who dies on the same night that he easily wins a fight that would have guaranteed him a fight for the championship. The main suspect in what has been ruled as a homicide is Primo Canto, a 6'7", 280-pound ex-heavyweight contender who also happened to be TNT Gale's trainer. Set in Las Vegas, where the strange is often ordinary, the improbable meets the impossible as the two detectives delve deeper and deeper into a sport that can be much more dangerous outside the ring than in, as the twists and turns will keep you on edge from the first page 'til the last.
