When the misguided Angel Gabriella resolves to make the world a better place, she travels through time to eliminate the dawn of Christianity. Gabriella's terrible deed accidentally divides the universe like an amoeba, spawning a barbaric civilization, not a better one. Flash forward to our modern-day world. Brewster Delay, a recession-challenged businessman, and Carla Summers, a struggling shopkeeper, somehow exist in both dimensions. They dream about the one while living in the other. The angel sees God's hand in this anomaly. Clearly, Carla's duplicate, Maynya, must be a messiah for the morally bankrupt people in the land of Virtus, and Brewster's double, the soldier Quintus, can protect her. An affair between Brewster and Carla might stimulate love between their doubles-possibly igniting enough emotion in Maynya to awaken her latent, miracle-working powers. Gabriella's clumsy attempts at puppeteering culminate in more than romance. Over here, the police soon arrive at Brewster's doorstep charging him with Carla's murder. And in Gabriella's Latin-speaking world, Quintus learns he must kill his own brother to rescue Maynya, the priestess of a people living in chains. Brewster learns he can revise two realities vibrating like tuning forks and rewrite the fate he shares with Carla, Quintus, and Maynya. But how can he reverse his beloved Carla's death and exonerate himself, when the butterfly effect would kill Maynya and perhaps leave an entire civilization without its savior?
