Choosing honor over loyalty, William de Hauteville has crossed his liege lord. Fleeing the repercussions takes William to the castle of Prince Guaimar. William's erstwhile simple existence is further complicated by falling for Guaimar's niece, Lady Guida. As the prince's niece she is destined for a noble marriage, and no mere knight may have her. If William is to gain her hand he must change his station, which will be no bloodless endeavor. Combining loyalty and honor, he realizes he must depart, leaving Guida open to marry another. Wars are not fought overnight, and Guida finds herself tossed about in William's absence. After surviving an assault, Guida fights the paralysis of fear as her father works to marry her off. Without a sword or her beloved William, she is promised to a man who plots to murder her uncle. Armed with determination, and a knife, the memory of William propels her onward as she protects herself against the assaults of men, parries the barbs of her vicious aunt, as well as battles her own internal demons in order to find happiness.
