This dictionary contains 2000 of the most commonly used words and phrases in English, Basque and Spanish. Linguistically, Basque is unrelated to the other languages of Europe and indeed, as a language isolate, to any other known language. The Basques are indigenous to, and primarily inhabit, a region that straddles the westernmost Pyrenees in adjacent parts of northern Spain and southwestern France. Recent estimates put the number of speakers at approximately 2.5 million. Spanish is the official or national language in Spain, Equatorial Guinea, and 19 countries in the Americas. Speakers in the Americas total some 418 million. In the European Union, Spanish is the mother tongue of 8% of the population, with an additional 7% speaking it as a second language. It is usually considered the world's second-most spoken native language, after Mandarin Chinese. You will find an interesting number of words between these three languages which are cognates, but spelling and to some degree pronunciation often varies. This dictionary is extracted from our Words R Us system, a derivative of WordNet. English Wordnet, originally created by Princeton University is a lexical database for the English language. It groups words in English into sets of synonyms called synsets, provides brief definitions and usage examples, and records a series of relationships between these sets of synonyms. WordNet can be viewed as both a combination of dictionary and thesaurus. This dictionary will be indispensable for any international company doing business in areas where Basque and Spanish are spoken.
