Echoes of Thermopylae
Costas Komborozos
The historian drifted through the angular antechamber and stood before Artaxerxes. Fires glowed dimly on pillars as he watched the Persian king redirect his gaze toward him. Artaxerxes understood how the historian's eyes were blameless orbs of exhaustion as he had deprived himself of nocturnal rest. The historian had taken on the task of rewriting the history of the Persian wars. The historian had recently learned of Artaxerxes' goal of rewriting the events that led to the Persians' defeat and his father's retreat back to Asia. "Herodotus, the Father of Lies, said that the histories were beyond conquering, that they were the work of the nine muses. He viewed his version of the Persian wars as being final, but he failed to realize that I have the power to conquer his narrative in order to reshape it entirely. I will conquer the histories and make them my own."
