Elbert County, Georgia Reminiscences
June Bond Fowler Carlson
Flora Janie Bond Fowler (1905 - 1986), an Elbert County, Georgia, native, was an unpublished writer. She filled journals with stories, and history of her state, town and family, covering a period from early 1900 - 1959. She painted a picture of life and experiences, often humorous, of her childhood in a farming community and the family's move to town. Following graduation, she taught at Woodlawn, a one room school in a rural community. Her marriage to William Henry Fowler, Sr. made the headlines in the local paper because of the unusual circumstances. Facing an emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix, with outcome unknown, they chose to marry before the surgery. Flora and Henry were members of the First Methodist Church in Elberton where Flora taught Sunday School and was a frequent speaker at various church meetings. Her daughter, June Fowler Carlson, author of "I Kissed the Face of God," inherited the journals and after many years decided to fulfill a lifelong dream of her mother's by having them published. June has included her mother's poetry and a brief genealogy. The book is indexed.
