A great disaster left Inisheoda, one of four islands on the western coast of Ireland, deserted. The other three islands are at peace following the Island Wars which raged with terrible consequence. But the mystical beasts of Inisheoda - creatures jewelled in all colours of the rainbow- are now of the past and legend. Or are they? And has the cost of peace been too high for some rulers? Now Oisín, young kinf of Inishlaochra, orphaned just after the conflict, is advised the king of neighbouring Inishfrach -Oriel- makes war noises, forming an alliance with one who possesses a dark magic.
