Vonda DeJanes is looking forward to playing basketball in high school in Indianapolis with her best friend, Ruby, but when their parents whisk both of them away from their rough neighborhood, Vonda doesn't know if she'll ever see Ruby again. Spending the summer of 1972 on her grandparents' farm in Seymour, Indiana, Vonda transforms from a girl into a woman, discovers her calling, witnesses the darkest depths of young love, experiences its brightest highs, and most importantly, befriends a "monster" - Muscatatuck Jack, himself.
